Your visit

Our team of specialists provide expert care for people with a variety of eye problems including cataract, refractive surgery, glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal disorders and more.
With a fully accredited surgical theatre, state of the art diagnostic tools and a diverse range of eye specialists, all your eye care needs can be addressed at our centre.
Southern Eye Centre has been providing quality eye care for adults and children in the Frankston, Mornington Peninsula and greater Gipplsand areas since 1997.

Your appointment

For most visits you will need to allow about 90 minutes for your consultation.

At these visits you will have dilating drops in your eyes. These drops dilate your pupils to allow the doctor to get a proper view of the inside of your eye. Dilating drops cause blurry vision and may make you very sensitive to the sunlight. It will take several hours for these drops to wear off. It is advised that you bring a driver to your appointment or arrange for someone to pick you up.

At every visit you spend time with both the Doctor and the Orthoptist (the Doctor’s assistant). this ensures that all necessary tests and preparations are done to best assess and treat your eyes.

Referral Information

As we are a specialist medical practice, it is a requirement that patients are referred to our practice by an approved Referring Practitioner ie. your general practitioner, optometrist or other specialist.

All new patients must ensure they have a current referral as this provides our specialists with the reason for your visit as well as any health concerns and/or current medications.

You must have a current referral to ensure you are paid your entitlement from Medicare.

A referral from your GP or Optometrist is valid for 12 months from the date of issue. A referral from another specialist doctor  is valid for 3 months from the date of issue.

The referral letter must include:

  • Date
  • Patient Name
  • Date of birth
  • Reason for referral
  • Practitioner name
  • Practitioner provider number
  • Medical history is advised (if possible)
  • Medications (if possible)

For patients who come to us on a regular basis eg. every 6 months, you may request an indefinite referral from your General Practitioner.  These referrals need to be updated every 5 years, If the patient presents with a secondary problem (different from that covered by indefinite referral) then a new referral must be presented at that visit.

A patient can still be seen by one of our specialists  without a referral but a Medicare benefit will not be paid towards the cost of the visit.

Fees & Medicare claims

Fees for consultations, tests and procedures are claimable from Medicare. The Medicare rebate component of the fee may not be equal to the full amount of the fee.
Payment of all fees are expected on the day of your appointment.

Medicare are no longer providing cash rebates at their centres, nor sending cheques out through the post.
Where you have notified Medicare of your bank account details, Southern Eye Centre will be able to electronically process your Medicare rebate on the spot.

Some tests and procedures are not claimable from Medicare.

We are happy to discuss fees and services openly. If you have any queries please speak to the reception staff on arrival.

Health Insurance & DVA

Depending on your health fund and your level of cover your consultation and diagnostic testing fees may be covered by your Health insurance provided.
It is the responsibility of each patient to discuss with their own health fund their level of cover.

Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) will fully cover consulting and testing and most procedure costs for eligible Veterans Affairs card holders.
Please present your Veterans’ Affairs card on arrival.
Transport to and from the centre via a DVA taxi is available. Please inform the reception staff at the time of making your appointment if you require DVA transportation.
